Karma – what goes around comes around. I am a believer in karma to some extent. The current COVID19 pandemic that has hit the globe is allowing people to become more mindful of their actions. According to Mindful:
“Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us”.
I have never washed my hands as much as I do now – each and every time I return home from shopping I wash my hands for 20 seconds. I am also more aware of the physical distance between me and others. That’s an interesting one, i.e. social distancing.
Today while I was buying vegetables and fruit and the main Suva market, I noticed that the practise of staying 2 metres away from each other was not being followed. This frustrated me. I decided to handle this by quickly buying what I needed and then left within a span of 10 minutes.
I have stayed home and only go to the supermarkets and Suva market to shop once a week. One of the questions that is arising within me during this crazy time is: “How safe are we really from external events?” Our world is very interconnected and now international borders are closing off to each other. Closing off international borders is fine but if we cannot even follow simple rules like allowing for 2 metres distance between each other and being hygenic (which includes not spitting in public), will we ever be safe from the existing Coronavirus and other viruses that will arise in our lifetime?
I am optimistic that this time of awakening helps people to realize how their behaviours can affect others. I also realise that some people are still not mindful of their actions. They only think of themselves and their families’ wellbeing.
COVID19 is a time for the entire globe to unite and see all people and living beings as our family. Each and every action that we do will affect our environment (including people). Take the time today and beyond, to ask yourself two important questions: 1. Is the action that I am doing at this present moment affecting my environment (including people near me) in a positive way or not? 2. Despite what’s going on around me, can I remain centred and calm?
