Making Space

This week I had the opportunity to resume repainting and fixing my old family home. The Fijian Government has allowed its citizens to gather with less than 20 people since Monday this week, provided that physical distancing is followed and if there is nothing people have to do, to stay home. Today, I decided to start decluttering my home and sort through some old things, including family items to either sell or donate. I found some lovely art pieces which my late mother had purchased. Including a beautiful oil painting, that depicts a fishing boat scene sometime in ancient China. I started to imagine the serenity of the boating scene and sense the smells of the sea. The painting is a shade of light blue with a tinge of softness.

I love the feel of old things and the energy that they hold. I have found that decluttering and making space is allowing me to create new projects and work with a clearer mindset.

How have you found your self isolation so far? Do not get me wrong. This period is extremely hard for everyone. There are situations which are harmful for families, including the rise in domestic violence. Globally, helplines have been set up to answer phone calls from those who are suffering at the hands of their intimate partners. Prior to COVID19, there was already a high incidence of sexual and physical violence. According to a statement by the Director for UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka:

Even before COVID-19 existed, domestic violence was already one of the greatest human rights violations. In the previous 12 months, 243 million women and girls (aged 15-49) across the world have been subjected to sexual or physical violence by an intimate partner“.

All things considered, have you had time to sort through your household items such as clothes and thought about having a garage sale or donating? Old things have sentimental value and it is important to keep them to remember your loved ones by. But there is a time to release them and make space for newness.
